CRITICAL CARE – HEART WORM POSITIVE

BRUNO – MINI RED MALE – 4 ½ YEARS

It was a normal day at Devoted 2 Dachshunds Rescue when a lady messaged to say she knew of a dachshund near her that belonged to someone she knew, she was concerned because he had been attacked by 2 dogs next door, he also was poorly looked after and tied up; she asked if she could persuade the person to let her have him, could we step in and take care of him and re home him.
The little man was located in Mackay, and yes of course we would take him, as she was unable to have more than 2 dogs at her home she was so relieved and happy to know that D2DR would come to the rescue.

D2DR arranged and paid for the flight from Mackay to Brisbane; and Rosalie and I as well as his future foster Carer were at the airport to meet him in, when we opened the crate, this tiny little man come out and cuddled straight into his foster Carer’s arms, she sat on the ground and let him just snuggle in, his coat was matted like straw, someone had also shaved a smooth hair dachshund? He had scars over his body from being bitten by other dogs, all in all, it was a very sad sight; one we wish not to see too often as our hearts break just a little more each time.
Bruno was taken straight to our vet Dr Ernie for a vet check, when it was clearly suspected this little guy could be Heart worm positive, upon testing the next day it was confirmed, and this little man was going to be in for the long haul, months of medication, lots of good nutrition, lots of care and above all lots and lots of love.

We can never stop the tears from running down our faces, as we write such stories of neglect, we can only balm in the comfort that a kind soul knowing this dachshund was suffering and took charge of a situation and had our support for Bruno at the other end.

Bruno has been with us for approximately 4 weeks, he needed to get stronger with good nutrition and care before he could start his treatment for heart worm last week.
This will be a lengthy treatment of injections spanning over 4 – 5 months; Bruno will make a full recovery because of the support, care and specialized vet treatment that Devoted 2 Dachshunds Rescue has been able to provide.
