Walter is a very beautiful, smart little boy who is house trained, loves the garden, is very cuddly and loves, loves, loves his food but Walter is also his own kind of special so please take the time to read the description below as he needs owners who have the time, resources and patience to help him recover from lack of training that has developed acute anxiety and reactivity.
Walter would thrive in a very quiet two-person household with no children or other animals; a good-sized yard and a couple who enjoys secluded hikes, beach walks and outdoor adventures. Walter is not for someone who wants to take him to dog parks or be walked around the neighbourhood during busy times. Walter needs a lot of space, quiet and calm and therefore would not suit an apartment.
Walter is an Alpha dog. In his current foster home, he has tolerated a sweet, docile female but only through focused training and boundary setting as Walter demonstrated jealous and aggressive behaviour towards her, which is why he is best to be an only dog with no other pets, no children or loud young people. He also has acute separation anxiety which will need to be managed.
The house he requires is a two-person household with light foot traffic. It would suit a household where one person works from home and both owners work collaboratively with his training in a focused and patient manner. He is on anti-anxiety medication and Walter’s new owners will receive free ongoing support with a regular behaviouralist to assist with training. The foster carer and the trainer have already spent some time with Walter on reducing reactivity during walks and boundary setting to limit his aggression and reactivity.
Walter would really suit mature owners who not only understand Dachshunds and have experience with the breed; or owners who want to embrace learning more about animal behaviour and put in the work required to train Walter.
In the short period of time the foster carer has observed that Walter does learn quickly and did not take too long to make her home his own and get comfy. Despite all of his challenges, Walter is a loving and sweet little boy who will make his owners his universe.
