Winnie is a nine-year-old Dachshund with a heart-wrenching past and some health challenges, now looking for a patient, loving foster carer to make all the difference in her life.After surviving a tough October, Winnie longs for that one special human who can give her the understanding and the stability she deserves.

 Miss Winnie’s story is bittersweet. She was owned by an elderly woman now in aged care, and while they shared a close bond, Winnie’s upbringing left her without the basic social skills and boundaries most dogs learn. She would guard her space fiercely, baring her teeth at any stranger—whether human or canine.

When Winnie first came into the care of D2DR, it was clear she needed both physical and emotional support. She was overweight, which made walking difficult for her little legs, and her health had been neglected, with a chronic skin condition and dental issues. After D2DR worked tirelessly to get her health back on track, a tooth extraction took an unexpected turn, leading to a diagnosis of Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia—a rare blood disorder where Winnie’s immune system attacks her own platelets.

Winnie spent several days at Animal Referral Hospital and was not at all well, however she is well on the road to recovery and back to her feisty self.

Winnie’s care is ongoing at this stage, she requires monthly visits to the vet to monitor her platelet levels and regular checks at home for signs of bruising or any relapse.
Her medication is slowly being reduced after each check up at the hospital.

 In her ideal foster home, Winnie will thrive with someone who understands her quirks and can go slow with introductions. While she has shown patience with a fellow senior Dachshund, she doesn’t tolerate young puppies well and would be best suited to a home without young children. Winnie has made strides in adjusting to her foster home, especially with her separation anxiety, but she’s still learning the manners that many dogs take for granted.
