Meet Charlie: A Charming Dachshund Seeking His Forever Home

Quick Facts

• Dapple, Smooth Coat Male Dachshund who is 2yo old weighing 7kg

About Charlie

Charlie is an intelligent and playful dachshund who combines independence with affection. His bright, curious nature makes him a delightful companion, and he's already shown tremendous progress in his foster home alongside two larger dogs.

Personality Highlights

Charlie is a quick learner, especially when treats or play are involved! While he can be independent and enjoys exploring the yard on his own, he also loves snuggling on the couch with his humans. He's particularly fond of squeaky toys though he needs durable toys due to his enthusiastic chewing habits.

Current Training Progress

House Training: Well on his way to being fully house trained, reliably using the yard during daytime hours. Will cry or bark to be let out to potty  at night when crated.

General Training: learning how to be trained, what rewards are, Food, Play, vocal praise and physical praise. Learning what punishments are, verbal corrections and redirection. Learning marker words such as “good boy” “yes” “no” “ah ah” ect

• Lead Skills: Enjoys walks and car rides but is working on reducing pulling both forward and backwards during walks due to his excitement/anxiety

• Social Skills: Making steady progress in meeting new people. Initially cautious but especially of men but will warm up to women quickly.

Daily Care

Diet: currently is hand fed royal canine kibble for training sessions, he enjoys working for his food.

• Exercise: Enjoys active playtime in the yard

• Sleep: Settles well through the night when in the crate, I believe it is best to keep the crate training as part of his routine and structure.

• Behaviour: when lacking routine and structure he is known to show destructive, possessive and aggressive behaviours towards other animals and items, he does have some prey drive that makes him not suitable to homes with other species.

Charlie would flourish in a home that offers:
• Patient owners committed to continuing his socialization journey
• either a home with no other animals or only 1 or 2 calm medium/large dogs *Children above 3yo or no children
• A secure yard for exercise and bathroom breaks
• Understanding that he thrives off knowing what to expect in day to day life, currently this looks like;
Waking up in the morning to be let out of his crate and go outside to potty and hang out while the humans eat breakfast in the yard with him, playing with his larger companions, coming inside to hang out while the humans do things around the home, going back in the crate for an hour or 2 while humans run errands, being let out of the crate into the yard to potty and play with his larger companions for a few hours then coming inside for the afternoon to watch tv and cuddle with a human on the lounge before finally being let out to go potty and have a quick play one last time before being put in the crate at bedtime.
