A big hello to all our supporters 🐾,
We’ve had a huge influx of rehomes; to be exact, 22 dachshunds have come into re-homing in under 2 weeks, and we are welcoming them all into our hearts here at D2DR with new and old foster carers stepping up to receive them into their loving homes.
We have lots of vet checks, desexes and vaccinations to get through, as we process them all to be ready for their new forever homes.
We appreciate only kind and understanding compassion as this is such a difficult step for owners involved who are experiencing hardships, personal struggles and the ever-continuing rental crisis.
In this email we have stories happy endings, events, giveaways and more.
The science behind the ZOOMIES
There's nothing quite like witnessing the joy of a dachshund experiencing zoomies. Scientifically known as Frenetic Random Activity Periods (FRAPs), these sudden bursts of energy often leave us chuckling at their exuberance. But why do our daxies do this? Simply put, they’re expressing their happiness!
Zoomies can occur for various reasons, such as releasing pent-up energy or expressing excitement, often triggered by specific moments like being let off the leash, seeing a favourite person, or after a bath. While zoomies are more common in younger pups, even our senior dachshunds can occasionally join in the fun. It’s essential to ensure they zoom in safe areas to avoid injuries, especially if they have joint issues. If your dachshund is frapping frequently, it might be a sign they need more exercise or mental stimulation. Enjoy these joyous moments and remember, a happy dachshund is a healthy dachshund!
Donation Receipts for the 2023-24 Financial Year
We have just completed another record year of rescuing and rehoming dachshunds across Australia. In the 2023-24 financial year, nearly 40% of our income came from donations, which are crucial for our operation. This year, we faced significant challenges with increased veterinary costs, including multiple surgeries for conditions like IVDD and Pes Varus, resulting in an operating loss. Despite this, our commitment to our "open door" policy remained strong, ensuring that no dachshund is left behind, regardless of age or health condition. We handled around 170 dachshunds, with 32 in permanent foster care, and continued to cover their medical expenses for life. We are grateful for the incredible support from our donors, which allows us to continue our vital work. Thank you for your ongoing support, and we look forward to another year of making a difference in the lives of dachshunds.
Happy Endings
Teddy
Teddy our gorgeous 1 yr old flew Brisbane to Melbourne to a beautiful family with a 3 yr old Dachshund named Dusty. Teddy took the flight down in his stride and came bouncing out to greet his new family with teens and after a week has become best friends with his new Brother Dusty.
Teddy is settling in beautifully. He’s had a great afternoon exploring and is just settling down for sleep.
Thank you so much for organising his travel, Ricky. 😍😍🐕🐕
King Odie
King Odie with his two sisters flanking him. He is adored and loves his new home.
Another successful adoption story, according to his peasants (parents) he rules the roost.
Wilson
This is Wilson (our foster fail/rescue) with our other dachshund Cash. They love each other very much. Wilson is the most adorable dog with a very good nature and so much love to give.
Thanks to D2DR for bringing him into our lives last year - they do such wonderful work. 🐶 💕
Maggie & Mitsi
We had another successful rehome in Victoria last weekend for our cheeky mother/daughter duo Maggie & Mitsi. Our fosters lovingly (and very patiently) cared for these girls for 9 long months due to a number of different behavioural and health issues to get them ready for their new forever home. The girls certainly won the lotto with their new mumma who is a retired music teacher that has adopted 12 needy dogs over a span of 40 years.
A huge special thanks go to Christine & Rob for the amazing work that was put into these two little monkeys and also the 4+ hour round trip to drop them off 💜
Events
At our recent events we introduced our new Spinning wheel (which was super popular) and guess the weight of the jar. At our Christmas in July event, we also reintroduced our super delicious Sausage sizzle and cakes.
These events also give us the chance to showcase some of our wonderful volunteers and without their help, we would not be able to attend – so a very big thank you from all of us.
We would also like to thank the lovely businesses and people who have generously given us donations of items and if you have anything that you no longer need, or that can be used in our raffles (ie items or gift cards/certificates) please contact us.
In closing we have some exciting events currently “under construction” which we hope many of our lovely supporters will be able to attend with their puppers, so please keep an eye on our D2DR and D2DR Events pages for further updates.
The last month or so we have been super busy with a variety of Events – including:
- Pups in the park at Wynnum on the 26th May
- Pooch and Paws at Mt Gravatt on 15th June
- The Pet Show at the Convention Centre on 22nd and 23rd June
- Christmas in July at East Brisbane on the 7th July – an event held by us with some of our amazing stallholders in attendance
These events are extremely important for us for a number of reasons, including, but not limited to:
- raising awareness of our charity and showcasing our work
- meeting and being able to talk to the public about what we do
- sharing some of our lovely dachshunds that are available for adoption and also that have been adopted,
and of course - raising funds through our raffles, our Op Shop for Dogs and of course various other items for sale, of which many of the items had been donated to us.

Featured Adoption
Meet Peggy and Wilbur, an adorable and loving pair looking for their forever home. Peggy, the gentle red girl, adores cuddles, walks, and sticking her face near yours. Wilbur, a stunning chocolate and tan dachshund, matches his sister's affectionate nature and enjoys snuggling and playing with other dogs. Both are friendly, though they can be vocal around other dogs. They thrive on human companionship, love car rides, and are toilet trained. Given their fondness for food, a little weight loss would benefit their health. They are desexed, microchipped, fully vaccinated, and ready for a home where someone can be with them most of the time. Peggy and Wilbur are ready to bring joy and love to a family that cherishes them as much as they will cherish you.
