We hope this email finds you, your family and your Daxie well!
Once again, we have seen a huge influx of surrenders during July/August, 28 in total.
In that mix we sadly have had 2 dachshunds that tested positive for Heart Worm a disease easily avoided with a 1 tablet monthly costing $10 – Its incredibly heartbreaking for us that some people disregard the health of their animals and allow them to be in distress. Heart worm disease is both debilitating physically and financially as its a costly treatment over a 9 month period coupled with strict confinement i.e.: no walking, running, in fact hardly any physical activity that puts extra stress on their hearts, I have no words to describe this lack of care, but “animal cruelty” comes to mind.
We have also had 2 x IVDD dogs surrendered, Lucy in Brisbane and Merlot in Melbourne both due to lack of insurance/funds and knowledge to support this surgery, and conservative treatment was not an option for either dog due to the severity of the disc herniation.
Lucy and Merlot are now in post – operative rehabilitation with 2 wonderful caring and loving fosters, and as well one of our long-term Permanent Foster's Ava has had her 2nd IVDD surgery and is healing well.
On a happy and positive note, we have seen 38 dachshunds adopted during July/August, so we have lots of happy new Dachshunds and owners including a few ring-ins and crosses that came our way, like our gorgeous Labradoodle X and our English Staffy (both previously living with dachshunds)!
The Fundraising committee, run by our Directors Amy Innes and Sandra Beevers have been equally as busy attending many Dog Market fundraisers and flying the flag for D2DR, Karen one of our volunteer/foster carer, who is very crafty has been sewing and making all sorts of saleable items; and the fundraising group and fosters have now got together and had a couple of craft days, sewing, cutting and making more items to sell.
Our beautiful Coco who was surrendered via The AWL and who was adopted a year ago has now had her Pes Varus corrective surgery and will spend the next 6-8 weeks recovering till her frame comes off. Coco is one of the 3 Dachshunds that were waiting on Pes Varus surgery till we had the funds available for this very expensive operation, we still have Milo and Lily waiting in line. As these are not life-threatening surgeries, an IVDD will always take precedent over any other surgery.
There are 2 very special people I would like to thank this month, firstly, Kylie Black of Magic&Mojo who is our inhouse behaviourist/trainer and foster carer for the huge amount of work she does with our foster carers getting little behavioural issues sorted with some of our dachshunds so they can be successfully re homed.
Second is Peggy Vlismas for her untiring commitment to D2DR, she plays an enormous role in re homing our Dachshunds through Facebook media, as well as being an awesome volunteer.
Thanks everyone and thanks to all of you that read our newsletter, support us in time of need financially with donations and via the Angel Program.
The D2DR Team.

Could your dog have IVDD? - Dr Alison Chen from The Acupuncture Vet shares some important info to help you navigate this question.
Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) can progress quickly, but early detection can make all the difference! Watch for these common signs: reluctance to walk, back or neck pain, wobbliness, fatigue, toileting troubles, or dragging paws.
If your pet is showing any of these symptoms, don’t wait—call us or your vet and get your pup checked out.
