Meet Walter and Clyde: A Bonded Pair Seeking Their Forever Home
Walter and Clyde are a wonderful bonded pair who must be adopted together. They are looking for a loving home where they can share their affection and settle in. They will quickly find a place in your heart
Quick Facts:
● Walter: 4 years old, black and tan, desexed male, miniature dachshund. Walter is a little overweight - 10kg.
● Clyde: 2 years old, red, desexed male, miniature dachshund. 6kg.
● Both are a bonded pair and will be adopted together.
About Walter and Clyde: Walter and Clyde like to tussle and play together but mostly will just curl up and sleep with each other. They will become your shadows. Walter is a big softy. Both boys like sleeping in bed with you, and if Walter is not by your side, he will be glued to Clyde's. Clyde is more timid than Walter and takes time to warm up to new people and surroundings.
Personality Highlights:
● Clyde: Timid when he first meets you and takes time to warm up. Barks at visitors initially. Once he does warm up, he's extremely cuddly and won't leave your side. Likes to snuggle and sleep in your bed under the covers. Will try to muscle in and climb over Walter to get your attention and cuddles. Finds a hiding place if scared and needs coaxing to come out. Responds well to reassurance. Will even sit on your feet while you are doing the washing up just to be close to you. Can get possessive of human attention and doesn't always react well when his carer leaves, barking aggressively at her dog occasionally. Barks at other dogs. Very excitable if he hears loud noises or is startled. Has an aversion to headgear like hats and helmets.
● Walter: A big softy. Likes to tell you about noises that he hears and if anyone comes to the door. Likes to come for a snuggle and sits next to you on the sofa. Barks at other dogs if he sees them and they are coming towards him. Meets other dogs nicely in the dog park. Barks at visitors initially but quiets down when he's reassured. Snuggles under the doona in bed. Glued to Clyde's side if not by yours. Can snatch if there is fresh food or treats around (i.e. chicken necks) if you're not careful, so he's learning some manners around sharing and being gentle.
Current Training Progress:
● House Training: They are mostly toilet trained but be prepared for accidents while they are settling in. They would benefit from a doggy door.
● Lead Skills: Both dogs are quite strong and due to their exuberance when out on walks, their new owners will need to be strong while the lead training continues so they can enjoy their walks a bit more calmly. Clyde pulls on the lead and is hyperfocused if he sees another dog. Walter needs training to do the same on the lead as he does meeting dogs nicely in the dog park.
● Social Skills: Both dogs would benefit from more socialisation, especially while out and about, so they are able to meet and greet other dogs more calmly. Clyde needs more training to build his confidence if there was another dog in his new home, especially regarding his possessive behaviour. Clyde needs to learn some manners when meeting other dogs for the first time but is usually fine with them. Walter is fine with children and quite happy to be played with.
Daily Care:
● Diet: Walter is a little overweight so has been on a diet. Both have 2 meals a day. They have a mix of wet tinned food (currently Hills Science light adult) and kibble in the morning followed by just kibble in the evening. They will sit for their meals. Whilst they are fed at the same time, they are not fed next to each other so that they only eat their own food.
● Exercise: Both like to go for walks. Clyde loves a good run in the dog park, though his recall is dependent on whether there is another dog there. Walter likes to sniff around in the dog park. They like to tussle and play together. Walter will play with toys and likes a ball or a chew toy, whereas Clyde isn't really interested in toys.
● Sleep: Mostly curl up and sleep with each other. They snuggle under the doona in bed. If Walter isn't by your side, he will be glued to Clyde's.
● Behaviour: Whilst mostly fine with their foster carer's other dog, Clyde can bark aggressively at her dog occasionally and gets possessive of human attention. Both bark at visitors initially, though Walter quiets down when reassured. Walter tells you about noises he hears. Clyde is sensitive to loud noises and doesn't like sudden movements. Walter can snatch food/treats.
Health Status:
● Both boys are desexed.
● Both microchipped.
● Both fully vaccinated
● Treated with Simparica trio for flea, worm and ticks. The last dose was given on 30th May.
Walter and Clyde would flourish in a home that offers:
● A quieter adult only household or a small family with older children. This is due to Clyde being sensitive to loud noises and not liking sudden movements, and preferring adult company and a quieter environment due to his more timid nature. Walter is fine with children.
● Someone who has flexible working arrangements and will be home more often than not, due to a degree of separation anxiety.
● A grassed yard with secure solid fencing (i.e. colourbond) to reduce the barking.
