Meet Bullets
Affectionately known as Bully
Bully wasn't being difficult — he was just having a really difficult time.
This handsome boy grew up as a much-loved inside dog, sharing his home with another dog who had been his best mate and companion his entire life. He was very much part of the family and knew nothing other than having his people and his doggy friend around him.
Then, in a relatively short period of time, Bully's whole world changed.
He lost his lifelong canine companion, his family moved into a brand-new home, and suddenly he went from being an inside family dog to living outside as a single dog.
It was simply too much change for this sensitive boy, and his anxiety showed itself through constant whinging, barking, howling and screaming — day and night. His family tried many things to help him settle, but Bully just couldn't adjust to his new life.
Then Bully came to D2DR, and we discovered the dog underneath the anxiety.
Since coming into care, Bully has shown us that he is actually a fun, loving, sweet and surprisingly easy-going boy who simply needs companionship, reassurance and to feel like he belongs.
He has settled beautifully into life with other dogs and loves being inside with his people. He particularly enjoys curling up on the couch for cuddles or lying happily at your feet while you work — because apparently supervising humans is a very important dachshund responsibility!
He is also perfectly happy spending time outside during the day when he has a friend to keep him company. If his humans are inside and he's outside, he may still have a little whinge at the door, but he's quickly learning that “out” means it's okay to go back outside and that his people aren't disappearing forever.
Bully is a clever boy and learns quickly. He knows how to sit and wait patiently for his food. He's also a surprisingly slow and modest eater…
Thankfully, Bully is now officially on Weight Watchers, so we're working on getting him back to his handsome dachshund figure!
Bully has also shown us that he's curious about the world around him. He will chase cats, but if he catches up with one, he is gentle, cautious and curious rather than aggressive. He has not shown a particularly high prey drive towards chooks either. He once chased an escapee hen, but when told to stop, he listened and stopped — good boy, Bully!
He gets along well with other dogs and has shown that he can take direction from them. If another dog gives him a firm but fair correction, Bully is respectful and listens.
With bigger dogs, however, he can initially feel a little intimidated and may growl or react defensively. Interestingly, if the bigger dog doesn't react and gives him the opportunity to feel safe, Bully quickly realises there is nothing to worry about and can become friends.
He's also great with kids and loves being part of family life.
Bully has generally been very respectful of his surroundings and likes to stay close to home — although there was one memorable occasion when he decided to wander out the front gate and take himself for a little stroll down the road with his selective hearing firmly switched on!
All in all, Bully is a really sweet and kind-hearted boy who has come such a long way.
What Bully needs most isn't a perfect home. He needs a loving family, canine companionship, patience and the reassurance that he is safe, wanted and part of the family.
We believe the right home will allow Bully's beautiful personality to continue to shine — because this boy has so much love to give.
If you're looking for a funny, affectionate, cuddly and wonderfully goofy dachshund who just wants to belong, Bully might be your boy.
And yes… his new family will need to help him stay on the Weight Watchers program!
