Dear Members,

In light of new information received after we sent the newsletter yesterday, we are required to send an updated article about Raya below. We apologise for the multiple emails ☺️.

Raya’s Story

Meet our new “rescue” …..we’ve named her Raya (meaning) Ray of Sunshine.

As D2DR is the breed specific rescue partner to RSPCA, we received an email on Thursday to ask if we could take on this little 2 yr old female, One thing though that was apparent was that she formed a bond with small dogs; so it was decided that it would be best if she could be integrated into a loving foster home with other dachshunds.

The choice of foster carer came very quickly to me, it was to be Laura Leaver our long term ivdd foster carer, her husband Mark and their lovely caring daughter Imogen, providing they would accept to take her. They already have 2 of our ivdd boys Wilbur and Ari, Ari only just recovered from his ivdd surgery with us a few months ago and both are permanent fosters with D2DR.

Well it was a slam dunk as soon as I asked, and yesterday Laura picked up this very sad little girl and she shed quite a few tears on her way home with her. Wilbur and Ari welcomed her in instantly, Wilbur is such a gentle boy, and she took to them as well,
part A of the plan was successful.

Yesterday morning we met at our Brookfield vets and saw our wonderful owner/vet Dr Cath Toft at 11 am. Nothing can describe the sheer anger I had at meeting this emaciated, fearful little soul, who loved the boys but would not come near a human. She just looked like a ghost of a dog. She has been desexed by RSPCA, her little body at 3.9KG showing her rib cage and spots on the top of her head. We can fix her body, however healing her soul is going to take a long time, one thing for sure she will never suffer again. We sincerely thank the RSPCA of entrusting her into our care.

A lesson here to be learned the only way we are going to have any chance of putting a stop to puppy mills profiteering, is to support and where possible buy only from an ANKC-registered breeder. Dachshunds, along with many other breeds, have been bred in appalling and unethical circumstances that has created oversupply and leads to significant health issues. Not to mention this overpopulation leads to euthanasia of hundreds of healthy unwanted pets and full and overcrowded shelters and rescue organisations in Australia. The only way we can ensure an animal has not been bred in appalling and unethical circumstances is to visit and assess the conditions yourself.

At D2DR we have some 40+ dachshunds available for adoption, all these dachshunds have been fully vet checked including dentals when necessary and desexing and are just waiting for their forever homes. Please consider Adoption.

Overbreeding - A Major Animal Welfare Issue
Overbreeding involves breeding an animal more than its body can safely handle resulting in detrimental health effects to the mother and her puppies.
