Meet Basel: An energetic, loving Dachshund Seeking His Forever Home
Quick Facts
Black & Tan, short hair dachshund who is 6 years old male weighing approx 5kg
About Basel
Basel is an intelligent and playful dachshund who combines independence with affection. His bright, curious nature makes him a delightful companion. He is a rare dachshund who doesn’t suffer from separation anxiety. He is very energetic and he will chase a ball ALL day but will also spend hours holding a vigil for a lizard behind a rock.
Personality Highlights
Basel is very intelligent and eager to please. He is very independent and enjoys exploring the yard on his own, but he loves deep cuddles and nestling under the covers at night finding a warm tummy to snuggle against. He is on the go all day but once he stops he is still all night snoring and loves a lie-in.
He particularly fond of tennis balls and playtime. He will love you forever if you throw his ball for him. He probably prefers his ball to food..
Current Training Progress
House Training: Is house training but can mark when he is with another dominant male who also marks. He will happily go outside to toilet and doesn’t have accidents as such.
Lead Skills: Enjoys walks and car rides but is working not reacting to other dogs when out. He loves people but can snap at other dogs. His favourite thing is to be off lead and having a good run chasing his beloved ball. He especially loves the beach. He ignores the other dog as long as his ball keeps moving but you have to keep a close eye on him.
Social Skills: Basel loves people and will go to anyone for a cuddle or a throw of his ball. He is exceptionally friendly and not at all anxious around people. Currently working on reactions to other dogs during outings.
Basel will chase cars as he is fearless. He mustn’t be unleased around traffic ever. Even if it’s just from the car to the front door of your house.
Daily Care
Diet: Currently eats Scratch dried dog food or raw food from Inner Wolf on the Sunshine coast. He can become thin very quickly so it’s important he eats enough. He isn’t aggressive around food, but will quickly inhale his and try and move onto the next bowl..
Exercise: Enjoys active playtime and regular walks. Loves running and is extremely fast. He loves chasing his ball more than anything else.
Sleep: Settles well through the night when sleeping with family. Sleeps in family bed under the blankets.
Behaviour: No food or toy aggression. Basel does need to be the dominant dog. He wants to be the alpha and is very good with females or submissive males, but not good with other alpha dogs. Ideally he would be paired with a female, or be on his own.
Basel would flourish in a home that offers:
Patient owners committed to continuing his socialization journey
A calm, structured environment
Canine companionship but if the dog is female or submissive. Basel can be dominant and aggressive towards other dominant dogs.
A secure yard for exercise and bathroom breaks. He will go off on an adventure if he can escape the fence.
He needs commitment to his ball throwing. He loves to fetch his ball and will be happy running and chasing it for as long as he can.
